About the race

The majestic Drakensberg between Sabie and Lydenburg in Mpumalanga sets the stage for one of South Africa's most popular running events – the Longtom Ultra & Half Marathons. Run in one of the most beautiful parts of our country, this tough challenge has been voted consistently amonsgt the top 5 ultra marathons in South Africa for the past five years. The latest ratings announced in 2010 ranked the Longtom Ultra Marathon as the 2nd best race overall in South Africa for the period 2005 – 2010 (The Comrades Marathon took 1st place honours).
The event is well organised and has grown rapidly in popularity amongst professional as well as amateur athletes from across the country.

The Longtom Ultra Marathon is the “Everest” of ultra marathons in South Africa and is arguably the most difficult race of this distance on the South African road race calendar. The downhill half marathon is popular amongst serious runners as well as social runners. Whilst an ever increasing percentage of participants are from Gauteng, both races attract many runners from Mpumalanga and is a highlight on the Thaba Chweu community calendar.

2012

The Longtom Marathon celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with special celebrations planned for race day!   "On 31 March 2012 we plan to celebrate the unique lifespan of one of South Africa's greatest races. The Longtom Marathon has come a long way since the days when the 56km attracted a mere 213 athletes. The Longtom Marathon Trust aims to host another world class road running event for the people who have kept this race alive during the past 25 years." said Loma van der Walt, race director of the Longtom Marathons. "Longtom athletes are a different breed of runners. They say that the mountain gets in your blood and you need to get back to it year after year! It's their passion that has carried this race forward in the most difficult times and this is part of what we will celbrate on 31 March 2012!"
